This simple and flexible jig makes shaping easier, faster and safer. The best way to make the jig is to make a template with your CNC and use that template and a router to make all the jig parts. Dimensions are critical so make sure you read the detailed project information in the July\/August 2014 Fine Woodworking article, Smart Jig for Pattern Routing<\/a> and watch the Video<\/a>. This is a template for make laying out to the proper 3-1\/2″ spacing and routing out the top and bottom plates of the jig. When I need to make my own jig parts \u2014 such as a new bottom plates for a need, I use this template rather than a CNC. It’s just simpler. My standard collection of jig parts are shown the product gallery.<\/p>\n

The CNC’d jig template makes laying out top and bottom plates fast and simple. A few two-clamp top plates, a one-clamp top plate combined with bottom plates of various lengths and shape and you can pattern shape anything. I no longer use part-specific specialized shaping jigs. With over 100 pieces pieces in my furniture line, 95% of all parts are pattern shaped with this jig set. Really.<\/p>\n

To make the template with a CNC use a 1\/4″ bit and 1\/2″ MDF to make the template. Then make the jig parts using a 3\/8″ bit, a router with a 5\/8″ bushing and 1\/2″ and 3\/4″ Baltic Birch Plywood. Refer to the 2014 Fine Woodworking article for the details.<\/p>\n
